Segeju in Tanzania

The Segeju of Tanzania and Kenya are the remnants of a once numerous, warlike group of herdsmen. They have closely integrated with the Digo and the Shirazi peoples, and have adapted to an agricultural setting. They were once so ferocious that they formed an alliance with Vasco da Gama's Portuguese settlers and helped to drive away the Zimba cannibals from Mombasa. Today, they are far from warlike and are one of the least known tribes in Kenya. The main social grouping of the Segeju is the mlango, or clan. Like many other coastal tribes, the Segeju are virtually all Muslim of the Shafi'ite branch.

Ministry Obstacles

Few resources are available in the Segeju language, and they are a small Muslim people group. They are likely to continue to be overlooked.

Outreach Ideas

Pray that Christians nearby will be given a concern for this small tribe, and will take steps to take the Good News of Jesus to them.

Pray for the followers of Christ

Pray for the handful of followers of Jesus among this people group, that their faith will be protected and nourished by the Holy Spirit. Pray they will be sent mature believers to teach them and help them grow in faith.

Pray for the entire people group

Pray for a movement to Jesus to multiply among Segeju families and communities. Pray the Lord will give Segeju families understanding and responsive hearts as they hear about the love of Christ. Pray the material and physical needs of this small tribe will be met, and that their children will be able to obtain an education adequate to prepare them for employment, and to start small businesses.
