Maranao is the term used for the people of Lanao, a predominantly Muslim region on the island of Mindanao. They are famous for their artwork, sophisticated weaving, wood and metal craft, and their epic literature. The word Maranao means "people of the lake." Small communities of Maranaos, mostly traders, can be found in all major towns of the Philippines. They are the descendants of Muslim Malays. They are fair-skinned, probably attributable to Arab and Chinese admixtures. The native Maranao have a fascinating culture that revolves around kulintang music, a specific type of gong music.
To follow Jesus within this Muslim community is to invite criticism and ostracism, and may cause the loss of friendships.
Perhaps the Christians among the Maranao people will grow in maturity and in numbers to the extent they will be able to effectively carry the Gospel of Christ to their own people. Pray for a church planting movement.
Pray for Maranao believers to become effective and fruitful in sowing God's Word among their own families and friends to fuel a movement of God's blessings spreading from household to household. There are some among the Maranao community who know and follow Jesus Christ. Pray for them to be zealous as they learn the ways of Christ. Pray they will be united around the truth of Scripture, and be faithful witnesses for Christ among family and friends.
Pray the Maranao community will increasingly be drawn to Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih) as they read the Koran. Pray for curiosity about this Man. Pray the Lord will reveal himself to them.
